GLP-1 Maintenance Dose

Every GLP-1 label is written in two phases: escalation, the timed increases at the start, and maintenance, the ongoing dose once the climb ends. People hear the phrase maintenance dose used loosely online, sometimes for amounts no label contains. This page sticks to what the labels actually say: the maintenance dose named for each product, how it differs from escalation, and why any adjustment to it is a prescriber decision.

The label maintenance doses

ProductMaintenance dose on the labelNotes
Wegovy (semaglutide)2.4 mg once weeklyThe label allows 1.7 mg once weekly when 2.4 mg is not tolerated
Zepbound (tirzepatide)5 mg, 10 mg or 15 mg once weeklyOne of three maintenance doses, chosen by the prescriber
Ozempic (semaglutide)Up to 2 mg once weeklyThe ongoing dose sits within the labeled range and is set by the prescriber
Mounjaro (tirzepatide)Up to 15 mg once weeklyThe ongoing dose sits within the labeled range and is set by the prescriber

These are the only maintenance doses this page will name, because they are the only ones the labels name. Each product page and dosage chart on this site shows the full schedule behind them: the Ozempic dosage chart, the Wegovy dosage chart, the Mounjaro dosage chart and the Zepbound dosage chart.

Escalation versus maintenance

Escalation is the staircase at the start of treatment: a low starting dose, then increases spaced weeks apart, so the stomach and appetite adjust gradually and side effects stay manageable. Maintenance begins where the staircase ends. It is not a step down and not a reward dose. It is the dose the prescriber judges right for ongoing treatment, held steady week after week, and it is the dose the long term trial results were largely produced at. The GLP-1 dose schedule calculator maps both phases onto a calendar from your own start date, which makes the handover between them easy to see.

Adjustments during maintenance

Maintenance does not mean frozen. Prescribers adjust within the labels: holding an escalation step for longer before moving up, settling on the lower Wegovy maintenance dose when the higher one is not tolerated, or choosing among the three Zepbound maintenance doses as response and side effects dictate. What all of these have in common is that they are prescriber decisions, made with your results in front of them. Splitting doses, stretching intervals or inventing amounts sits outside the labels entirely, and the GLP-1 microdosing guide explains why that territory carries risks with no evidence behind it. If your maintenance dose feels too strong or too weak, that is information for your prescriber, not a prompt to redesign it yourself.

Maintenance is not the same as stopping

The two ideas get confused because both come up when someone reaches a goal. A maintenance dose continues treatment at a settled level, which is why the trial results for continued treatment show weight held or improved. Stopping ends treatment, and the stopping evidence, covered in the stop semaglutide and maintenance after a GLP-1 guides, shows regain as the common pattern. Which of the two fits you, and when, is the conversation the forever question page frames. This page simply keeps the vocabulary straight, because the right discussion starts with the right words.

Frequently asked questions

What does maintenance dose mean for a GLP-1?

It is the ongoing weekly dose a prescriber settles on after the escalation phase, the timed increases at the start of treatment, is complete. The labels name the maintenance dose or range for each product, and treatment continues at that level with regular review.

What is the maintenance dose for Wegovy?

The Wegovy label names 2.4 mg once weekly as the maintenance dose. When 2.4 mg is not tolerated, the label allows 1.7 mg once weekly instead, a choice your prescriber makes based on your response and side effects.

What is the maintenance dose for Zepbound?

The Zepbound label names three maintenance doses: 5 mg, 10 mg or 15 mg, each once weekly. Which one a person stays on is a prescriber decision, weighing weight response, side effects and overall health.

What is the maintenance dose for Ozempic and Mounjaro?

Their labels describe a dosing range rather than one fixed maintenance dose. Ozempic runs up to 2 mg once weekly and Mounjaro up to 15 mg once weekly, and the prescriber sets the ongoing dose within the labeled range for each person.

Can your prescriber lower your maintenance dose?

Yes, adjustments inside the label are a normal part of treatment, including settling on a lower maintenance dose where the label offers one. What is not safe is adjusting it yourself: changing amounts, splitting doses or stretching intervals moves outside the labels and outside the evidence.

Sources. Maintenance doses are taken from the dosing sections of the FDA approved prescribing information for Wegovy, Zepbound, Ozempic and Mounjaro, published on DailyMed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, and match the dosage charts published on this site.
